Blog Stage 5 Original Editory
Most of us remember the 2017 "Bathroom Bill" that kept the transgender Texans from using public restrooms and only using them based on their birth sex. Many christian conservatives insisted that this would protect the privacy of women, by not having men in the same restroom as them. However, Many businesses such as amazon, and apple were very upset with this bill, as it caused problems with customers and is said to be "unnecessary, discriminatory, and divisive measures that would damage Texas’ reputation and create problems for our employees and their families." This statement defends the LGBT community very well. Not allowing a person to use a public restroom in restaurants, or students having to only use a nurses room to use the restroom is dehumanizing. Bringing back this bill from the dead would not be reasonable or smart for Texas to bring back, as most of the population in last two years has grown to be less conservative, and the LGBT community has grown to be stronger and has the support of many.

I fully agree with this commentary. The bill was no doubt discriminatory towards transgender individuals. By forcing transgender's to go into restrooms that they do not feel comfortable in they are taking away their legitimacy altogether. The complete dismissal to an entire community of people is outrageous. The only problem I have seen are people purposefully lying about their gender just to make a point when they're the sole cause of the issue. People should feel comfortable in public and no one should be forced into going somewhere that is against their identification. Imagine being forced to go into the restrooms opposite of your identification and how uncomfortable it would feel. Texas must push past the discrimination of any community and promote freedom to the people who live here.
ReplyDeleteThis is such an important issue. Like to someone like me, I don't really care who uses what bathroom: it really doesn't keep me up at night. But to someone who is transgendered, it's incredibly important. It's such a simple thing that can make people feel less insecure and so much more included and accepted in society. A lot of the arguments I have seen against it is mostly women being concerned about men being creepy and going into the women's bathroom, but that just clarifies that our priorities are misplaced. Maybe if we all start respecting each other a little more, this won't seem like such a crazy idea.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your article (that's why I chose to do my blog on it) and I let me start by saying that I agree with everything you said. The article is very solid and I like the attention getter because it had me intrigued from the start. With that said, there are a couple changes that could make your article much stronger. When you say "Many christian conservatives insisted", I think that turns off a lot of readers. If you keep it just as "Many insisted" to keep it more appealing to the masses, and would get your point across further. And same thing when you talk about the past 2 years, instead of mentioning Texas becoming less conservative, say that Texas is becoming more accepting. But those are just nit picky things that I'm recommending because your paper is so well written. I also like how you use Amazon as an expert, because everyone knows Amazon and it makes your point very strong. Great article overall, and hopefully we will live in a less judgmental Texas someday.
